IB Economics: How to write GOOD Real Life Examples in Paper 1 Essay?

There are two main reasons why students' 15 marks essay in Economics paper 1 do not score higher than 11 marks. Most likely first reason is because evaluation is not thoroughly done.

And the second reason would be due to the fact that the real life examples presented are not convincingly deep and specific enough.

To improve the quality of RLE in a 15 marks essay, let’s check the tips to write a convincingly deep and specific real life example.

A. Let’s assume that you would like to analyse fiscal policy and aggregate demand change, by using a real life example to demonstrate how fiscal policy increases AD, you must demonstrate as specifically as possible as below.

Demonstrate your RLE knowledge via using the following structure:

  • Who– what country/region: What country or city is the government?

  • When: which year? Or period? The year 2022? 2023?

  • What – which measures did the government implement: What policy specifically? What kind of tax got reduced? If the government increased its expenditure, what kind of expenditure on where such as welfare or subsidy?

  • How much? – increase/decrease by %, from X to Y: It is more convincing if you have numerical data. By what percentage did the tax increase or decrease? If it increased government spending, how much??

  • Result – what it resulted in and by which extent. What consequences are expected from such a policy change? Or what results have already been observed?

As far as the content summarised above is concerned, only by writing down real life examples in this much detail, you will be able to prove that you have properly understood the syllabus concepts and theories, so that you can get a level 7 score in 15 marks essay.

C. One more thing I would like to recommend is that there is no need for being stressed out about the possibility of memorising all the numeral data or accurate details. Economics is not an IQ test. All you have to do is remember the approximate numbers and present them convincingly.

D. Lastly, check out the RLEs below. You can see that, unlike number 1, number 2 RULE has put all the contents listed above logically.
