IB Economics: Real Life Example, which is as important as Evaluation in Paper 1, 15 marks essay! RLE #4: Demerit Goods Regulations!

For the 15 marks essay of IB Econ paper 1, writing Real World Examples cohesively and comprehensively has become very important, not only to prove your understanding and analysis skills of the content, but also to receive the designated marks according to the grading criteria.

In particular, through students' RLE, examiners evaluate whether students have the ability to properly connect and analyse Econ Theory and concepts to actual economic situations.

It all proves the fact that RLE is now an indispensable content in the 15 marks essay and is important enough to determine the level 6 and level 7 essays.

Policies to Reduce Consumption of Demerit Goods

A. Sin taxes: The Philippines has implemented “sin taxes” on alcohol and tobacco products, which are taxes that are specifically designed to discourage the consumption of products that are considered harmful to health. The tax revenues generated from sin taxes has been used to fund health programs, and studies have shown that these taxes have led to a reduction in alcohol and tobacco consumption.

B. Public smoking bans: Ireland was one of the first countries to implement a nationwide smoking ban in all workplaces, including bars and restaurants, in 2004. Since then, many other countries have followed suit. Studies have shown that these bans have led to a reduction in smoking rates, as well as improved air quality and public health.

C. Warning labels: Canada has implemented warning labels on both alcohol and tobacco products, which are designed to inform consumers of the potential health risks associated with these products. Studies have shown that these warning labels have been effective in reducing consumption of both alcohol and tobacco.

D. Minimum pricing: Scotland has implemented minimum pricing for alcohol, which means that retailers cannot sell alcohol below a certain price per unit. This policy is designed to target the cheapest, strongest alcohol products, which are often consumed by the heaviest drinkers. Studies have shown that this policy has been effective in reducing alcohol consumption among heavy drinkers.

E. Health education campaigns: Australia has implemented a range of health education campaigns targeting both alcohol and tobacco consumption, which are designed to inform the public about the health risks associated with these products. These campaigns have included mass media campaigns, school-based programs, and community outreach initiatives. Studies have shown that these campaigns have been effective in changing attitudes and reducing consumption
