IB English A Lang & Lit Paper 1, Outlining practice that makes level 7 essay of Non-written text: Cartoon!

For IB Eng A Lang & Lit Paper 1 exam, you will be given the task of writing an essay, analysing unseen texts. Given the fact that thorough analysis skill is a prerequisite, what I emphasise adding to the skill is to spend 5-10 minutes properly preparing the outline of the essay first, and then start writing your essay.

What is a decent outlining that guarantees a level 7 paper 1 essay?

Let's check out one of the Paper 1 text outlining that completed through several revisions with my students in my class. The text below is a Non-written text that from a recent past paper.

Intro:

  • Present: cartoon posted on Gabby‘s Playhouse website called “The 21st Century”

  • Target audience: English speakers who are interested in entertaining contents and social issues.

  • Purpose: to alert the readers on the risks of overuse of smartphones and potential privacy supervision

Body 1: Protagonist and his world positioned as Before adaptation

  • Repetition: Anonymous people with absence of distinct feature, serving background

  • Juxtaposition: Protagonist, located in the centre and having proud and content facial features and posture

  • Humour: dumb-phone instead of smartphone

Body 2: Initial adaptation stage of smartphone: dilemma & confusion

  • Colour: yellow screen just like other people

  • Rhetorical question: “Don’t I wanna be normal?”

  • Oxymoron: “authentic fake camera sound”

Body 3: Fully indulged into digital society: complete addiction and compromising

  • Symbolism: the eye as authority supervising

  • Satire: “tweeting” in the forest: nature vs technology. Even in the midst of a natural environment like a forest, individuals are so addicted to smartphones that they are disconnected from the serenity of nature.

  • Symbolism: indicating the fire as “hell”

  • Man walking with his eyes on the phone is unconsciously heading to the fire where it is indicated as a hell.

Conclusion

Limitation1: 2 big messages mixed, Privacy or addiction?

Limitation2: Too negative, disregarding utilities of the device in this modern world
