​IGCSE English Literature: How to revise Unseen literary texts, Poems and Drama? Check with a Sample!

As introduced from the previous post, when it comes to analysing unseen literary texts, it is important to focus on big 5 key analysing points.


To check the big 5 rules in practice, here follows a sample analysis and essay outlining for an unseen extract from a lit past paper.

Intro


Main idea: Depicting the tragic moment of witnessing her husband’s fall in the bathroom, the poet delivers great shock and horror that engulfed her. 



Body 1:

Analysing point: Bathroom is portrayed as a country and the components of the bathroom are portrayed as witnesses. 


  •  Simile, & metaphor: "the towels hanging like flags in a tiny hot country"

  • Personification: Blank faced, it tells no tales, won’t give up the secret. Personification


Body 2:

Analysing point: The writer compares the husband’s tragic accident to something that took him to an unknown region .


  • Metaphor: you brought another language back with you.

  • Anthropomorphism & pathetic fallacy : an empty house abandoned to the wind and rain.


Body 3:

Analysing point: the writer uses emotive diction and the structure of a conversation to create a sense of confusion. 


  • Simile & Symbolism: The hotel quiet as a church. Simile The word ‘hotel’ evokes a sense of death, god, angel

  • Enjambment: I can only guess which loving object tried to catch you. Enjambment.
